Why Your Chamber Is Leaking

A leaking coating chamber can quickly turn a routine production run into a costly cleanup.
Coating dripping onto the press, inconsistent application, excessive consumption, and unexpected downtime are all signs that the chamber is no longer sealing or operating as intended. While the leak itself may appear to be the problem, it is usually a symptom of another issue within the chamber, blade, seal, or coating delivery system.
Understanding where leaks begin can help operators correct the problem faster and prevent it from returning.
Worn or Damaged End Seals
End seals are one of the most common sources of chamber leaks.
These seals sit at each end of the chamber and help contain the coating as the anilox roll rotates. Over time, friction, pressure, coating chemistry, and repeated cleaning can cause the seals to wear down, harden, swell, or lose their shape. Once the seal no longer sits evenly against the anilox roll, coating can begin escaping around the edges of the chamber.
Installing the correct seal material and replacing seals before they are heavily worn can help maintain a consistent seal while reducing coating waste and cleanup.
Incorrect Doctor Blade Installation
Doctor blades must be installed evenly and positioned correctly for the chamber to seal and meter coating properly. A blade that is crooked, damaged, installed backward, or not seated fully in the holder can leave small gaps where coating can escape. Even a minor installation issue can create uneven pressure across the chamber and lead to leaks along the blade edge.
Blade length is also important. A blade that is too short may not properly engage the end seals, while a blade that is too long can create unnecessary pressure or distort the seal.
Excessive Chamber Pressure
Applying additional pressure may seem like a quick way to stop a leak, or to adjust how the coating is being transferred, but too much pressure can make the problem worse.
Excessive pressure can compress or deform the end seals, increase blade wear, and place unnecessary load on the anilox roll. It can also create uneven contact across the chamber, leading to premature component wear and inconsistent coating transfer.
The chamber should use only enough pressure to create a clean, controlled seal against the anilox roll. When additional pressure is required to stop leaking, an inspection of the blades, seals, alignment, and chamber condition should be performed.
Improper Coating Flow
Leaks can also be caused by coating entering the chamber faster than it can circulate back through the system. If the pump pressure is too high, the return line is restricted, or the coating viscosity is outside the recommended range, pressure can build inside the chamber. That pressure may force coating past the blades or end seals.
Operators should also inspect the supply and return lines for restrictions, confirm the pump settings, and verify that the coating is being circulated at the correct rate.
Dried Coating and Contamination
Dried coating around the blade holder, end seal area, or chamber body can prevent components from sitting flush. Even a small amount of buildup can create a gap between the blade and the chamber or keep an end seal from seating correctly. Once coating begins leaking through that gap, the problem often becomes progressively worse during the run. Routine cleaning is critical, especially when changing coating types or allowing the system to sit between jobs. Blades and seals should always be installed against clean, smooth surfaces.
Chamber Alignment and Mechanical Wear
A chamber that is not aligned evenly with the anilox roll may apply greater pressure on one side than the other. This can cause uneven seal wear, blade deflection, or leaking from one end of the chamber. Alignment issues may develop after maintenance, component replacement, accidental contact, or long-term mechanical wear.
If leaks continue after replacing blades and seals, the chamber alignment and mounting components should be inspected. Worn hardware, damaged blade holders, or a chamber body that is no longer straight may require professional service.
Stop Treating the Leak as the Problem
A reliable chamber depends on the blades, seals, coating flow, pressure, cleanliness, and alignment working together. When one of these areas is overlooked, leaks can return and continue increasing coating consumption, cleanup time, and production interruptions.
